Investec Bank · 2000 - 2006
Building a bank's first PMO
I founded Investec Bank's inaugural Project Management Office and designed the methodology, governance, and executive reporting that became the blueprint for every large transformation that followed, including a major carve-out.

enterprise PMO at the bank
01
The context
Investec was growing across multiple geographies and taking on increasingly complex change: acquisitions, restructurings, regulatory programs, and major capital projects. Large programs were being run with talent and effort, but without a common method, common governance, or a consistent line of sight for executives.
A PMO earns its keep when executives stop asking 'where are we?' and start asking 'what should we decide?'
02
The challenge
Introduce shared methodology into a successful, entrepreneurial culture without smothering it.
Support both agile and waterfall delivery depending on the program.
Give the C-suite and board timely, honest visibility of risk.
Align governance with banking regulation across multiple African jurisdictions.
03
My role
I founded and scaled the PMO while also directing technology operations and cybersecurity governance, and I was a member of the bank's Change Management Forum.
04
How I approached it
Design a method people would use
I established standardized governance with both agile and waterfall methodologies, so teams could choose the right approach within a common framework.
Build the executive cadence
I set up C-suite and board-level reporting cadences for major programs, ensuring timely visibility and escalation of risk.
Align with regulation
I aligned technology and PMO governance with banking regulatory requirements across multiple African jurisdictions.
Prove it on the hardest programs
The PMO anchored major operational transformations, regulatory alignment, and complex corporate restructuring, including the Investec Asset Management back-office carve-out.
05
What changed
An institutional capability
The bank's first enterprise PMO, built from the ground up.
A reusable blueprint
The PMO's governance and methods became the standard for all large-scale transformation.
Better executive oversight
Board and C-suite reporting that surfaced risk early.
06
What I carry forward
Governance should speed decisions up.
If a PMO only adds reporting, it has failed.
Method follows culture.
Design the framework to fit how the organization already wins.
